The Lac qui Parle County Board recently approved a 25-acre land acquisition proposal by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for public use and conservation.
This marked the first such approval since 2019 when the commissioners denied two similar requests. However, those denials were overridden by the Minnesota Land Exchange Board.
During the recent meeting, which lasted about 15 minutes, the commissioners expressed support for the acquisition, which will expand the Haydenville Supplement Wildlife Management Area. Commissioner Todd Patzer, who had raised objections in 2019, noted a positive change in the process this time.
After the disagreements in 2019, the DNR leadership, including Commissioner Sarah Strommen, met with county representatives to address concerns and establish a process for future acquisitions.
This proactive approach, involving early communication about land interests and addressing potential issues beforehand, led to smoother decision-making.
The 25-acre parcel, mainly wetland and wetland fringe, was proposed for acquisition by the property owner due to its unsuitability for farming. By connecting existing tracts in the Wildlife Management Area, the acquisition will benefit wildlife habitat and enhance access for hunters.
As part of the acquisition process, Lac qui Parle County will receive an annual payment from the state instead of taxes, with estimated yearly compensation exceeding current property taxes. Commissioner Patzer praised the collaborative efforts of the DNR leadership and expressed gratitude for addressing county concerns effectively.
