Tragedy struck Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday as four law enforcement officers lost their lives and several others were injured in a devastating shootout.

The officers were serving a warrant for a felon wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm when the gunman opened fire, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings.

The fallen officers were part of a team attempting to apprehend the suspect, who barricaded himself in a home, sparking a three-hour standoff.
