Tragedy struck Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday as four law enforcement officers lost their lives and several others were injured in a devastating shootout.
The officers were serving a warrant for a felon wanted for unlawful possession of a firearm when the gunman opened fire, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings.
The fallen officers were part of a team attempting to apprehend the suspect, who barricaded himself in a home, sparking a three-hour standoff.
The U.S. Marshals Task Force and other officers were also targeted by the gunman, who was later killed in the front yard. Another individual inside the home, where a high-powered rifle was discovered, also fired at the officers.
The victims included a U.S. Marshal, two Department of Adult Correction officers, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer Joshua Eyer, who succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
The community is mourning the loss of these heroes who were simply trying to keep their community safe, as Chief Jennings poignantly stated.
