Following Thursday’s chaotic scenes, where three individuals were arrested and eight police officers injured, authorities extended a Section 60AA order that empowers them to remove face coverings to prevent further unrest.
The police cited previous use of masks by demonstrators to commit serious disorder as the reason for maintaining this order until Monday. The scene outside the hotel became increasingly volatile, with protestors chanting inflammatory slogans and targeting police vehicles.
The protest drew individuals from across the UK, with one Scottish participant telling the BBC her goal was to help “get the asylum seekers out.” The protest also included hostility toward counter-protesters, as police had to protect an elderly woman from masked demonstrators who followed and shouted abuse at her. The emotionally charged atmosphere reflects the broader national debate around asylum seekers and immigration.
Allegations Against Asylum Seekers Intensify Tensions and Prompt Strong Police Response Measures
The demonstrations were triggered by the arrest and charging of 38-year-old asylum seeker Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl by attempting to kiss her.
He has denied the charges at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court. The police have since charged another man for violent disorder and criminal damage stemming from previous clashes, underscoring the seriousness of the unrest surrounding the hotel.
In response to the ongoing disorder, Essex Police reiterated their commitment to upholding lawful protest while maintaining public order. A spokesperson emphasized the right to peaceful protest but warned of swift action against criminal behavior. The Section 60AA order currently covers the area around Epping, including the local tube station, as authorities prepare for potential further demonstrations in the days ahead.
