Ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week, a new poll reveals narrowly leading former President Trump. The ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos survey shows Harris at 49% support among registered voters, with Trump at 45% and 5% backing other candidates. This marks a shift from last month’s poll where President Biden and Trump were tied at 46% each.
When including third-party candidates, Harris maintains a slim advantage over Trump. The same poll indicates Harris with 47% support, Trump with 44%, and independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 5%. Independent Cornel West and Green Party’s Jill Stein each received 1% support.
Voter enthusiasm appears to be on the rise, with 44% expressing satisfaction with a Harris-Trump race next fall, a serious increase from the 28% who felt similarly about a Biden-Trump match last month.
The poll also highlights that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’s newly chosen running mate, is viewed more favorably than Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), Trump’s potential vice presidential pick. Walz received positive views from 39% of respondents, while Vance was favored by 32%.
As the Democratic National Convention begins in Chicago, Harris’s campaign continues to build momentum. She has recently closed the gap with Trump in various national and swing-state polls, holding a 1.8 percentage point lead according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s national average.
