A 57-year-old man, Mercury Psillakis, was killed in a shark attack while surfing with friends at Long Reef Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, September 6, when emergency services responded to reports of a man suffering critical injuries from a large shark bite. Despite being brought to shore, Psillakis died at the scene.
Shark Attack Claims Surfer’s Life, Authorities Investigate and Close Northern Beaches
Psillakis had been surfing about 100 meters off the beach with friends when a shark pulled him under just 30 minutes after entering the water. His friends managed to return safely, but Psillakis’s body was later found floating in the surf and recovered by bystanders. He suffered multiple limb losses during the attack, and attempts to save him were unsuccessful.
Authorities closed Long Reef Beach following the attack and are working with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to determine the shark species. Two pieces of a surfboard were recovered for examination. Rescue efforts included police boats and the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter to monitor the area and search for the shark. Beaches from Manly to Narrabeen remain closed pending further advice.

Psillakis was an experienced surfer and was surfing north of the lifeguard tower, outside the patrolled area. Surf Life Saving NSW extended condolences to his family, noting that volunteers are assisting authorities to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents. Detective Superintendent John Duncan described the event as a rare, “freak” incident for the region.
The attack is particularly tragic as it occurred on the eve of Father’s Day. Psillakis leaves behind a wife and young daughter. NSW Police and community members expressed their sympathies, highlighting the shock and sorrow caused by the sudden and violent nature of the tragedy.
