On Thursday, a group of Democratic lawmakers sent a strongly worded letter to the heads of two American private security firms, UG Solutions and Safe Reach Solutions, demanding answers about their roles in violent operations in Gaza.
The letter, first reported by CNN, was authored by Senators Peter Welch and Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Joaquin Castro and Sara Jacobs. They cited disturbing accounts that these companies’ personnel, composed largely of U.S. military veterans, were participating in lethal operations in the enclave while allegedly entering Israel on tourist visas not suited for combat activity.
Lawmakers Allege Contractors Used Deadly Force on Civilians at Gaza Aid Sites
According to the lawmakers, the contractors were sent into Gaza armed and ordered by Israeli officials to use deadly force against unarmed civilians, many of whom were seeking food. The letter accuses these personnel of engaging in aggressive crowd control tactics, including firing live rounds above crowds, deploying stun grenades, and using pepper spray, activities reportedly carried out in military zones under direct Israeli command.
These actions have drawn sharp criticism, especially as they took place around aid distribution sites, which have become flashpoints amid the humanitarian crisis.
The letter also raised serious legal concerns, suggesting the companies may have failed to inform their employees and investors of the risks involved in such military-like operations.
Lawmakers questioned whether these actions could expose individuals to lawsuits or war crimes allegations, particularly since the operations occurred outside Israel’s recognized territory. The lawmakers demanded that the companies provide detailed responses and preserve all related documents, signaling a potential investigation or legal scrutiny in the near future.
Safe Reach Defends Aid Efforts Amid Rising Criticism of Militarized Gaza Distribution Tactics
While UG Solutions has yet to respond publicly, Safe Reach Solutions defended its involvement, stating that its operations have enabled the delivery of nearly 100 million meals in a volatile environment where humanitarian workers face constant danger.
A spokesperson emphasized that Safe Reach is proud of its logistical support and intends to cooperate with lawmakers to correct what it described as misinformation. They also highlighted the foundation’s importance in delivering aid where traditional channels like the UN have struggled due to looting and instability.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which both firms support, has been controversial since its inception. While U.S. officials have defended it as the only viable channel for delivering aid amid Hamas interference, many international aid groups have criticized the foundation’s militarized approach.
Hundreds have reportedly died at food distribution sites, and critics argue the foundation’s methods blur the lines between humanitarian aid and military enforcement. An internal USAID review found no systemic evidence of Hamas looting, contradicting one of the main justifications for private security presence, further complicating the debate.
